Arts in River Park Festival

Description and review of the Arts in River Park Festival held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in mid-August.

This past weekend I checked out the Arts in River Park Festival, the first time I have attended the event.  It was held on Saturday, August 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on H Street in East Sacramento.

Arts in River Park, formed in 2002, is currently raising funds for the Sac Civic Ballet, a pre-professional ballet company based in Sacramento since 1996.

The free event featured a variety of live performances and activities, including a silent auction.  Food was available for purchase. Other activities included face painting, balloon art and caricatures (for a fee).

Arts in River Park Schedule

The Arts in River Park event had a full schedule that day:

  • 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. – Trouble – The Music of Coldplay
  • 10:35 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. – Fancy Feet Dance Academy
  • 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. – Tango & Salsa Demonstration
  • 11:40 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. – Sacramento Civic Ballet
  • 12:25 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. – Brennen Milton & Farzaneh Yoghmaei
  • 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. – BTU Arts, Bigger Than Us Arts
  • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ACE, Anthony Coleman II Experience

When I arrived that morning, I made my way over to check out the pirate ship parked in front and to the left of the Center.  No doubt it will be popular with the neighborhood children.

I made a point to arrive in time to take in the musical performance by Trouble, a San Francisco based Coldplay tribute band.  The crowd at that point was pretty sparce.

While listening to the band play, I made my way along the long tables displaying the items donated for the silent auction.  There were some very nice items, but I did not put in a bid.

As I was leaving, a group of cute little girls from Fancy Feet Dance Academy were arriving in advance of their performance.  I was tempted to stay to watch them, but I did want to complete several errands on my list of things to do that day so I continued on my way.

To Sum Up

I would guess that attendees at Arts in River Park will come and go throughout the day.  As for my description of the crowd being “sparce,” one must consider the size of the venue – which is huge.
