Description and photos of California Cathedral, one of the newest additions to Sacramento’s Public Art scene.
The renovation and expansion of the newly re-branded SAFE Credit Union Convention Center and SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center was accompanied by the addition of several new works of art in and around the complex.
I had been keeping a close eye out for the installation of the new artworks. One of the first installed is an intriguing sculpture titled California Cathedral. The sculpture is located on the corner of 15th and K Streets.

During a recent visit to the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center I took the opportunity to photograph the new artwork.
About California Cathedral

California Cathedral was created by Sacramento landscape architects Kimberly Garza, founder/principal and Eric Prince, principal, of Atlas Lab. Atlas Lab is a minority and woman-owned Sacramento business.
According to the Atlas Lab website, California Cathedral is intended to pay homage to the forests California has lost due to climate change.
The 25-foot-tall sculpture is supported by steel pillars. It is constructed of wooden planks of Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir, incense cedar and ponderosa pine. The wood for the planks was salvaged from trees lost as a result of drought and disease, byproducts of climate change.
The planks are layered so that the top and bottom of the sculpture flare out from the core of the structure echoing a tree form.
The untreated wooden planks look “new” for now, but they will change color as they weather naturally over time. I will be watching California Cathedral as it ages, and post another photo to document the changes at an appropriate point in the future.
