B Street Theatre in Midtown Sacramento is a small theatre – and there is not a bad seat in the house. Most of the plays produced each year are world, national, West Coast or regional premieres.
This past weekend I very much enjoyed the current production on the mainstage – Clever Little Lies by Joe DiPietro. Buck Busfield, the Producing Artistic Director, made the introductory remarks. Buck explained the special relationship between the playwright and B Street Theatre and then made note of the recent groundbreaking for the new B Street Theatre to be located at 27th Street and Capitol Avenue.

The Buck Busfield and Joe DiPietro relationship goes back to the very early days of B Street Theatre. In the early 1990’s the theatre was struggling and only had enough money to produce one more show. A young Joe DiPietro sent Buck (unsolicited) his new script The Virgin Weeps. B Street Theatre produced the World Premier of The Virgin Weeps, the play was a big hit, and both the theatre and the playwright mutually benefited.
This long-standing relationship gave B Street Theatre the opportunity to be the first theatre in the country to present Clever Little Lies after its off-Broadway production.
The four-person cast of the comedy/drama are Julia Brothers (Alice), Rich Hebert (Bill Sr.), Jason Kuykendall (Billy) and Tara Sissom (Jane). I felt that all four actors did a great job bringing their characters to life.
The Plot: Billy and Jane have just had their first child. Billy is having an affair with another woman. Billy tells his father about the affair even though his father doesn’t want to hear about it. It doesn’t take long after her husband returns home for Alice to determine that something is wrong. Alice, the meddling mother, immediately calls Jane and invites her daughter-in-law and son over for dessert and to talk about “this and that”.
If you would like to see Clever Little Lies it is being presented at B Street Theatre through July 31.
