Description and review of the recent Greek Classical Guitarist Eleftheria Kotzia concert presented by the Sacramento Guitar Society and performed at B Street Theatre at The Sofia.
A friend and I attended the Eleftheria Kotzia classical guitar concert this past weekend. The concert, “A Mediterranean Journey with Eleftheria Kotzia”, was presented by the Sacramento Guitar Society (SGS).
The SGS is a nonprofit educational charity that presents monthly programs including concerts, workshops and outreach events. The concert was also a fundraiser for the SGS – the proceeds from the prize raffles will be used for the SGS School Outreach Program where visiting artists perform in local schools.

Eleftheria Kotzia has for decades regularly toured the world (Europe, Canada, the United States, South America, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East) performing works for solo guitar. Among other endeavors the multi-talented artist teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and gives masterclasses and training courses around the world. This was her first time performing in Sacramento.
This was also the first musical performance I have attended at B Street Theatre at the Sophia. The concert was held in the 365-seat Sutter Theatre (aka the Children’s Theatre).
It was a very intimate concert, with Eleftheria Kotzia seated on a chair in the middle of the stage with her guitar and a microphone situated in front of her. The acoustics of the theatre were exceptional – as one would expect given the newness of the theater complex.
Over the course of the evening Eleftheria Kotzia performed a variety of beautiful and complex solo guitar compositions – with one intermission. The composers of the works performed heralded from countries throughout Europe.
Before performing each song, Eleftheria Kotzia explained to the audience a bit of the background story of the composition and its composer. She has a delightful accent and was very engaging. As she performed the home country of the composers was often evident (i.e. Greece, Spain, etc.).
It was truly a pleasure to have the opportunity to see and hear such an accomplished classical guitarist perform. I have gained a new appreciation for the art form.
The B Street Theatre at the Sofia has partnered with SBL Entertainment to book a wide variety of musical entertainment – aka the B Street Theatre Music Series at The Sofia. I for one look forward to attending many more musical performances there in the future.
