(Last UPDATED 8/3/2022) Description and review of a rock concert held earlier this month at the B Street Theatre at the Sophia featuring vocals by Jack Gallagher.
Did you know that Jack Gallagher, a man of many talents and a well-known comic, can also sing? I had no idea!
Earlier this month a friend and I attended the 7th rock n’ roll/pop song Jack Gallagher concert – aptly named “The Joke’s on Me”. There were two shows that Saturday night, and we attended the latter one starting at 8:00 p.m.
I looked around the theatre before the performance started – and the place was packed! While this may have been my first time experiencing Jack Gallagher in his rock and roll persona it was obvious that it was not for others in the audience.
It was an evening of great music and laughs – and the band of talented musicians was awesome. The 90 minute show was a combination of both humor and music. Jack weaved personal stories and jokes, as well as interesting tidbits and observations about the songs played, into the show.

As Jack explained it, the act came together for the first time in 2009 – as a result of a conversation with a musician friend. What is equally amazing is that before each concert Jack and the band members only do two rehearsals – and then perform the show.
The songs played were from the late 60’s, 70’s and the 80’s and included songs by Tom Petty, Little Feat, Warren Zevon, The Mavericks, Grateful Dead, Rodney Crowell, The Turtles, The Band, Jackson Brown, The Birds, and Steppenwolf.
Jack’s “moves” on the stage may be lacking a bit in rhythm (i.e. a little stiff) – but he certainly can sing. He sticks with songs that he can sing well – no problem there as most songs were well-known favorites of those in attendance – the majority of which were baby boomers.
The six-member band playing with Jack Gallagher is made-up of well-known Bay Area musicians:
- Tommy Dunbar and Al Chan, Guitar
- Kevin Hayes, Drummer
- Allen Leong, Keyboardist
- Dean Chance, Harmonica
- Dick Bright, Fiddle
One thing for sure – I will be keeping my eye out for the next time Jack Gallagher performs a rock concert and show!

The Joke’s on Me: One Last Time Concert
(3/21/19) Earlier this month a friend and I attended the final Jack Gallagher & Band concert – The Joke’s on Me: One Last Time. Jack and the members of the band performed classic rock and roll numbers one after another – and naturally Jack added commentary.

Jack again told the story about how the band came about – and added that they have performed eight of the last nine years. It was obvious that they all really enjoy performing together – which explains why what was intended to be a one-time gig lasted as long as it did.
It was a bitter-sweet evening for Jack and the members of the band – all of which had members of their family and friends in the audience. Jack explained at one point that at 66 he was just not up to performing two back-to-back concerts two days in a row any more.
It was obvious that many of us in attendance had caught the act previously – and wanted to enjoy the musical blast-from-the-past one last time which we certainly did. At the end of the concert Jack and the band received a well-deserved standing ovation.
Jack, a talented humorist, did not say anything about completely retiring from performing – so I expect we may well have the opportunity to see him perform again from time to time – just not in the role of lead singer of a rock-and-roll band.
