The first Sacramento Mural Festival kicked off on Saturday, August 20th. During the week-long Festival artists worked long hours to transform a dozen walls/buildings into works of art.
The mural sites stretch from downtown Sacramento to midtown Sacramento. The artists chosen to participate in this inaugural festival hail from Sacramento, Los Angeles, Richmond, Portugal and San Francisco.
The Festival was sponsored by the Friends of the Sacramento Metropolitan Art Commission. The Project Manager was LeBasse Projects. LeBasse Projects is an international arts consultancy firm that partners with its artists and clients in developing large-scale exhibitions with a focus on public installations, sculptures and mural projects.
Numerous local organizations and individuals joined together to help make the Festival a reality for what I hope will be an annual event. Sacramento is clearly ready to move to the next level when it comes to art as evidenced by the level of interest in Sacramento’s Art Hotel.

For those of you not familiar with the Art Hotel – it was a temporary creation utilizing the inside and outside of a soon to be demolished building in downtown Sacramento. Dozens of artists let their imaginations be their guide as they transformed the old building into a series of works of art. There were long lines to tour the Art Hotel from the moment it was opened to the public until the exhibit closed.
On Wednesday last week I decided to make the rounds of some of the various mural sites to check on progress and to see the artists in action. I was also very interested to see what style and design each of the artists had chosen for their mural. The murals will stay in place for a least one year – and maybe longer depending on the owners of each building.
The Festival closed on August 27th with ArtJam 2016, the Friends of the Art Commission signature fundraising event. Proceeds benefit art education in Sacramento area public schools.
Now that the Festival is over, I intend to visit all the sites to view the finished works. Sacramento is now just a bit more beautiful and interesting that it was before.

It would be fun to gather some friends to walk the approximately three miles to view all of the murals – and then adjourn to one of the many local restaurants for lunch or dinner.
