This year marks the 66th Sacramento Music Circus Season. I was very excited when the upcoming lineup was announced. The Summer 2016 lineup is:
- Legally Blonde (June 14-19)
- Hello Dolly! (June 28-July 3)
- Seussical The Musical (July 12-17)
- Cabaret (July 26-31)
- Nice Work If You Can Get It (August 9-14)
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame (August 23-28)
Legally Blonde
I really enjoyed Legally Blonde. I am sure that most – if not all of you – know the Legally Blonde storyline. Delta Nu sorority sister Elle Woods and her dog Bruiser head off to Harvard Law School following the boyfriend who dumped her because she was not “serious” enough. Elle was determined to prove him wrong and win him back.
The Legally Blonde movie really lent itself to being adapted as a musical. For example, remember the “bend and snap” scene in the movie and the UPS delivery guy? If you don’t know the plot/ending I don’t want to give it away – and I highly recommend that you watch the entertaining Reese Witherspoon movie (2001) by the same name.

It was obvious from the first that “Bruiser” (played by Chico) had his role down pat – so I was not surprised to learn during intermission that Chico had played Bruiser on Broadway. Good Day Sacramento did a segment on Chico who was the original dog to play the part on Broadway. Chico, it turns out, started his career as a rescue dog.
Legally Blonde was very high energy – as most Music Circus productions are. The friend who attended with me told me several days later that she could not get the catchy tune “Blood in the Water”, sung by Professor Callahan and Company, out of her mind. I know exactly what she meant as I have had that same thing happen to me before as well.
Needless to say I am really looking forward to the remainder to the season.

The Music Circus schedule is typically announced in January, at which time current subscriber’s may renew, and new subscriber’s may make paid reservations for the coming season.
