The recent restoration of the Tower Records Mural in Downtown Sacramento at what once was the entrance of the K Street Tower Records store is celebrated.
The former Tower Records store on K Street had long sat vacant, and the vibrantly colored Tower Records Mural at the entrance of the store slowly faded and deteriorated.
Tower Records founder Russ Solomon commissioned the mural in 1973. It was completed the following year by graphic artists Frank Carson and Mitch Aronson.

The large mural covered the ceiling and sides of the building entrance. The ceiling featured an oval-shaped area with a blue sky and clouds at its center, and the side walls included the heads of women with blue flowing hair.
Ali Youssefi of CFY Development, a co-developer of the project to revitalize the 700 block of K Street, conceived and launched the Tower Records Mural restoration project.

Like many other Sacramentans, I followed the restoration work with interest, stopping by the work site periodically when I was in the vicinity to check on the progress.
The recent unveiling of the restored Tower Records Mural was cause for a real celebration!
Sadly, Ali Youssefi had died at a young age of cancer in the first quarter of last year – so he did not see the completion of the project he had launched. I did not know Ali – but I am sure that he would have been very proud.
Restored to its former glory, the mural will now grace the entrance of Solomon’s Delicatessen (so named in honor of Russ Solomon) when it opens later this year.

The real history of the mural predates the Tower Records at this location…if Solomon commissioned the mural it was prior to dubbing the store Tower. I went in the store with the mural complete when it was called “Sound Peddler”…
