(UPDATED 1/8/2020) Three Sacramento restaurants are on the 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand List in the 2019 Michelin Guide California!
Michelin recently announced its selection of the 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand Restaurants. The list features 151 restaurants throughout California serving a variety of cuisines.
First of all, what exactly is a Bib Gourmand restaurant? Bib Gourmand restaurants are restaurants that “serve high-quality meals which include two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less”. In other words restaurants that serve great food at a price point that is more affordable than Michelin “starred” restaurants.

Frank Fat’s
Frank Fat’s, located in Downtown Sacramento, is a long-time favorite of Sacramentans. Michelin notes “Frank Fat’s is a longtime Chinese-American staple in Sacramento that has been passed down throughout generations. The food sings with flavor, and the space is filled with charm.”

Mother
Mother, located in Downtown Sacramento on the K Street Mall, is the place to go for a delicious vegetarian bite. Michelin notes “Mother serves serious vegetarian fare in Sacramento. The creative offerings are expertly conceived and incredibly craveable.”
I have dined at and enjoyed the food at Mother, but have not written it up in a blog post to date. I guess it is time I circle around and do so in the near future! (See UPDATE below)
Other California 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmand Restaurants
To sum up, the Los Angeles area had the largest number of restaurants listed, 64, which comes as no surprise given the size and population of the region.
Up next was the San Francisco Bay area with 26 restaurants listed. I was glad to see that Yank Sing was on the list of San Francisco restaurants – I often suggest Yank Sing when asked for a recommendation.
The Wine Country was next with 17 listed restaurants. Restaurants classified as being in the “Wine Country” include restaurants in both Sonoma County and Napa Valley.
Other areas represented on the list (highest to lowest number of restaurants) are: East Bay-12; San Diego-8; Marin-6; Orange County-5; Peninsula-5; Santa Barbara-2; South Bay-2; Monterey-1.

Updates
(1/8/2020) Mother has closed its doors! Don’t despair – some of your favorite menu items will be available at its sister restaurant. Check out the “Dear Sacramento” letter that was posted on Mother’s website for details.
Text of Mother “Dear Sacramento” letter:
“Dear Sacramento,
It is with great admiration, love, and excitement for the future that we announce our retirement. Mother started almost accidentally, at the happy intersection of a delayed restaurant opening (for Empress Tavern) and a fortunate vacancy at 1023 K street. Over the past seven years we’ve created some killer vegetarian food, met lots of amazing people and had a pretty great time doing it.
But we are feeling our age. Many of our past employees have already gone on to new adventures and many of our current staff and loved ones are moving on to new projects. So we couldn’t be happier for the opportunity to hand over the keys to 1023 K Street to some good friends of ours (Announcement coming soon!) We love our little spot downtown, and we know they’ll take great care of it.
Craving a po boy or a farro salad? Head on down to our sister restaurant, Empress Tavern – right underneath the Crest Theatre at 1013 K Street. They’ll be opening for lunch starting January 8th with some of the Mother favorites on the menu. They will even take our gift cards. There will be some friendly Mother faces down there as well, and you can get a delicious cocktail if you’re in that kind of mood.
Thanks for everything, Sacramento. And don’t forget to eat your vegetables.
Love,”
