(Last UPDATED 10/19/2022) Description and review of Celestin’s Gumbo & Grill “Grab and Go” Lunch. NEW: Celestin’s permanently closed. See Update below.
After running a number of errands on the weekend I was starving – so I decided to treat myself and stop by Celestin’s on McKinley Blvd. to pick up a late lunch.
Celestin’s serves French Creole and Cajun influenced food. Two couples were enjoying a meal in the cozy venue when I arrived at 2:00 p.m.

Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted and my order was promptly taken. I knew in advance what I wanted – the Shrimp Po’Boy ($11).
I took a seat while I waited for my order to be prepared. The young man who was manning the front of the restaurant and waiting tables offered me a glass of water while I waited. Although I declined, I appreciated the offer.
The neighborhood was thrilled when it learned that Patrick and Phoebe Celestin were re-entering the restaurant business and opening a venue in East Sacramento. Although there were only two couples dining while I was there that day I am under the impression that business is good – especially during the evening hours.

It was not long before my order was ready – about 15 minutes from the time I entered the restaurant. Enticing smells emanated from the bag I carried as I made my way home.

I would describe the Shrimp Po’Boy (shrimp battered in buttermilk and fine corn meal, red onion, tomato, spring mix lettuces, pretzel bun) as a petite sandwich with big flavor. The shrimp were big and plump, and the creole mayonnaise sauce very tasty. The seasoned fries were a perfect accompaniment to what was a very enjoyable lunch. I should reward myself for running errands more often!

(9/15/2022) The Sacramento Bee reported earlier this week that Patrick and Phoebe are retiring and closing Celestin’s at the end of the year. So, you still have time (but not much) to have that last bowl of gumbo!
