(UPDATED 2/7/2023) Description and review of Chan’s Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese food in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento. NEW: See “Update” below.
After a recent neighborhood association meeting four of us decided to go to Chan’s Restaurant on Stockton Blvd. for dinner.
One of our group had worked in the vicinity of Chan’s Restaurant for years, and had been a frequent patron. She highly recommended the restaurant – her favorite Chinese restaurant in Sacramento. We were all on board to give it a try.

We arrived at Chan’s Restaurant right around 7:30 p.m. We were greeted warmly and seated – the only patrons in the restaurant. That seemed at bit strange, so when we received our menu’s we inquired as to closing time – only to learn it was 8:00 p.m. Despite the nearness of closing time the staff could not have been nicer.

Our friend then sought out the owner/chef to say hello and explain that she had not been around lately due to her retirement.
To start, two of us ordered a glass of white wine while the other two opted for a glass of burgundy ($3.50/glass). The wine was certainly drinkable and we had no complaint given the price.
Menu/Review
Chan’s Restaurant menu to very extensive – so I decided to follow the lead of my knowledgeable friend who raved about the General Chicken. Both of us ordered the combination plate which included soup, an egg roll, a cheese wonton, pork fried rice, and chicken chow mien along with our entrée of choice – in this case the General Chicken ($9.50).
One friend ordered the Kung Pau Delight. Our companion with gluten and other dietary issues went back and forth a bit with the waiter asking questions as to how various dishes were prepared. The waiter went and checked with the chef twice – and she settled on a dish that met all of her requirements – shrimp and vegetables with a side of white rice.
Before we were served our meals the two employees who had seated us and served us water, wine, etc. departed the restaurant – it was the end of their day. It was not long afterwards that the owner/chef came and served our meals. She was most gracious, and everything looked and smelled great.
My dinner was excellent and the portions large. I was glad to have leftovers to take home for lunch the next day. My other dining companions were also very pleased with their dishes – commenting on both the flavor and the fresh and crisp vegetables.
After we paid the bill the owner/chef, who was obviously the only person left in the establishment, started bussing the table – with a smile on her face after our thanks and complements.
To Sum Up
Chan’s Restaurant is not fancy – but it is definitely on my list of Chinese restaurants to re-visit. There were a number of dishes on the extensive menu that caught my eye.
Update
(2/7/2023) I have been advised that Chan’s closed its doors last year. The details are a bit hazy – do you have any insights to share on its closure – when, why?
