Description and review of Dodici Pizzeria, serving authentic Southern Italian pizza in the Alkali Flats neighborhood of Sacramento.

On a recent Wednesday early evening, I joined members of the Renaissance Society for an early dinner and to check out the newest pizzeria in town.

Dodici Pizzeria

Dodici Pizzeria opened February 3rd.  The restaurant, which formerly housed Anonimo Pizza, has had its interior refreshed in the interim. It is owned by the Adamo Family, who also own and run Adamo’s Kitchen in Midtown.

Dodici’s offers a very nice assortment of 13” pizzas ($15 to $23), and several salads along with a few desserts.  Order and pay at the counter and your order will be delivered to your table.

The pizza is very thin and crispy, and it has a nice chewy crust. The style is similar to Neapolitan, but it is described as more “rustic” as both Type 1 flour and standard 00 flour are combined to make the dough.  The pizzas are baked in a high heat electric oven.

Our group eventually filled two long tables, keeping both the kitchen and wait staff very busy. On each table there is an assortment of infused olive oils (garlic, chili pepper, rosemary and regular) as well as the standard crushed red pepper.  I did not try the infused chili pepper oil, but I was told it was very potent (as in hot).

I ordered the Margherita pizza ($15) along with a glass of Italian white wine ($14). The interior of the pizza is so thin that I easily ate ½ of the pizza and still did not feel as if I had overdone it.  All ingredients were high quality. I enjoyed the crust, which is how I judge pizza.

A few bites of a cannoli ($9.50) finished off my meal.  I, along with many others, boxed up the second half to enjoy the next day.

To Sum Up

Our large group put a lot of pressure on the kitchen and wait staff, but they rose to the occasion.  I look forward to returning and checking out some of the other interesting ingredient combinations.
