Description and review of Dumpling House, a casual Asian restaurant located on J Street in Midtown Sacramento.
A friend and I recently stopped by Dumpling House for takeout. Our plan was to pick up lunch and sit in my backyard to eat while catching up on life.
Parking
Situated on J Street in a busy part of Midtown, parking when visiting Dumpling House may well be an issue. Parking on a nearby side street may be your best option – unless you are lucky.

Dumpling House
The Dumpling House dining area is small, and the outside seating (sidewalk) is limited. While waiting for our order, it appeared that take-out was the most popular option.
Menu
After looking over the menu, we ordered three items to share. We were both surprised by the number of items in each order. We ordered:
- Pork & Chive Dumplings/12 ($11)
- Pork & Shrimp Shao Mai/8 ($12)
- BBQ Pork Bao/6 ($11)
It was obviously a pork kind of day!
The Dumpling House menu is varied, offering appetizers, dumplings, noodles or rice, bao and wontons, potstickers, and a list of chef-recommended dishes and vegetarian specials.
Our order was packed and ready to go in 15 minutes. Included in the package were utensils, napkins, and condiments.
Review
I generally try not to read reviews of restaurants prior to trying them, but I made an exception in this instance. Why? Well, Dumpling House does not have a website and I wanted to research the menu.
As it turns out, the reviews of the food are mixed, while the majority of comments on staff and service is complementary.
As we finished our lunch, my friend and I were on the same page. We thought that both the pork and chive dumplings and pork and shrimp Shao Mai were fine. Not the best we have ever had, but certainly not the worst. The BBQ Pork Bao was the weakest of the three. The texture and taste of the bun was not quite what we were used to, and the filling was so-so.
Maybe we should have tried one of the chef-recommended specials.
To sum up, I should add that we split the remaining dumplings, Shao Mai and bao – which was enough for another meal for each of us.
