Description and review of Ella’s Dining Room & Bar, a popular upscale restaurant located in Downtown Sacramento.
Prior to attending the theatre on a recent Tuesday evening, a friend and I dined at Ella’s Dining Room & Bar. My friend suggested Ella’s as she had been there recently and had two dishes in mind that she wanted to try. I had not been to Ella’s since pre-pandemic, so I was glad to go along with her suggestion. My experiences there have always been good.

Selland Family Restaurants
Ella’s is one of the restaurants owned by the Selland Family. Other Selland Family restaurants are The Kitchen, the multiple Selland Market-Café’s and OBO Italian Table & Bar.
The Kitchen was awarded a Michelin Star some years back, and it has maintained that status ever since. OBO Italian Table & Bar and the various Market-Cafés are popular casual dining options. I guess I would have to describe Ella’s Dining Room & Bar as somewhere in the middle – although it is on the pricey side.

Ella’s Dining Room & Bar
We arrived at Ella’s at 5:00 p.m., having made reservations earlier in the day. Greeted when we entered, we were immediately seated at a table for two next to a window. My friend had mentioned that we were going to the theatre, and this information had been passed on to our server Mike, who was most pleasant and efficient.
Ella’s décor is very attractive – light, airy and elegant. The large bar area is a popular spot during happy hour. Craft cocktails are a big draw, including their flagship gin and tonic made with house-made tonic.
Menu
We each ordered a glass of wine to start. My choice was the Morlet Sauvignon Blanc (Sonoma County) ($18). It was very tasty.
For dinner that evening my friend ordered the Pan Roasted King Salmon (Mascarpone creamed corn, chanterelle mushrooms, blistered tomato salad) ($46) and a side of Potato Gratin (herbed cream, dry jack & toma cheese, chives) ($14).
I was not as hungry, so I ordered the Stone Fruit and Tomato Salad (baby lettuce, goats milk feta, champagne basil vinaigrette) ($16) which turned out to be the perfect choice.
Prior to our meal, our waiter served us a plate with slices of a rustic bread accompanied by butter. I remark on this as many restaurants no longer provide complementary bread and butter with a meal.
The presentation of all of the dishes that evening was beautiful. The salmon received high marks, as did the potato gratin. I had a taste of the thinly sliced, stacked potato gratin – yum.
My stone fruit and tomato salad was likewise delicious, the light vinaigrette the perfect accompaniment.
To Sum Up
To sum up, from my experience you can’t go wrong dining at Ella’s – but the bill can add up fast. This is not so much an issue if you are in Sacramento on business and have an expense account. Many Sacramentans view Ella’s as a special occasion restaurant. Next time I visit Ella’s it will likely be for Happy Hour.

Mela and I have always enjoyed Ella’s. The food, service and presentation have always been spot on. Many a birthday and anniversary have been celebrated there.
Thanks for the comment.
The salmon with creamed corn was delicious, but the potatoes gratin was truly a visual and epicurean delight. Pricey, but worth it.
