Description and review of the recently opened Faria Bakery, located on Broadway in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento.
Faria Bakery, which you may be familiar with as a purveyor of rustic breads and other goodies at farmers markets around town, opened a retail brick and mortar location in October.
I stopped by the new shop for the first time recently. It was around 10:30 a.m. on a weekday when I arrived, intent on picking up a loaf of bread.
The indoor and outdoor public space at Faria Bakery is small, with limited seating. Be aware that, depending on when you arrive, there may not be a place to sit down to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry.
I looked over the small display of assorted pastries, but decided to wait until my next visit to treat myself. Something to look forward to!
The pastries produced by Faria Bakers are “viennoiserie” – a term which describes a category of pastry that includes croissants and brioche.
SacramentoRevealed.com – All Things Sacramento (from a personal perspective)
The breads produced by Faria Bakery are made of whole grains, organic flours, and are naturally-leavened. After asking the friendly counter-person a few questions about the breads on display, I settled on a loaf of the Olive Polenta (organic California- grown Yecora Rojo with Kalamata olives and herbs) ($9).
I looked up “yecora rojo” online afterwards to discover that it is a variety of hard red Spring wheat known for its flavor and bread baking qualities.
The exterior of the Olive-Polenta loaf was crusty, and the interior had great texture. I found the bread chewy and flavorful, and I enjoyed the saltiness of the brine each time I bit into an olive.
While I may not be inclined to purchase a $9 loaf of bread for everyday use, it occurred to me that this or one of the other rustic breads sold by Faria Bakery would be a perfect addition to a charcuterie board, among other uses.
