(UPDATED 11/24/2020) Description and review of Faria Bakery, located on Broadway in the Oak Park neighborhood of Sacramento.
Faria Bakery, a purveyor of rustic breads and other goodies at farmers markets around town, opened a brick and mortar retail location in October. The shop is located in the Broadway Triangle’s flatiron building.
I stopped by baker-owner Chris Beattie’s new shop for the first time recently. It was around 10:30 a.m. on a weekday when I arrived. On my shopping list – a loaf of bread.
The indoor and outdoor public space at Faria Bakery is quite small, with limited seating. As a result, be aware that there may well not be a place to sit down to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry.
Pastries
I looked over the display of assorted yummy-looking pastries available, but decided to wait until my next visit. Something to look forward to!
The pastries produced by Faria Bakers are “viennoiserie” – a term which describes a category of pastry that includes croissants and brioche.

Bread
Faria Bakery breads are made of whole grains, organic flours, and are naturally-leavened. After asking the friendly counter-person a few questions about the breads on display, I ordered a loaf of the Olive Polenta (organic California- grown Yecora Rojo with Kalamata olives and herbs) ($9).
Because I was unfamiliar with the term, I looked up “yecora rojo” online afterwards. Yecora rojo is a variety of hard red Spring wheat known for its flavor and bread baking qualities.
The exterior of the Olive-Polenta loaf was crusty, and the interior had great texture. I found the bread to be both chewy and flavorful. Additionally, I enjoyed the saltiness of the brine each time I bit into an olive.
While I may not be inclined to purchase a $9 loaf of bread for everyday use, it occurred to me that this or one of the other rustic breads sold by Faria Bakery would be a perfect addition to a charcuterie board, among other uses.
To sum up, you may want to order online in advance to ensure your choice of bread, pastries, etc. are available when you drop by!
