(Last Updated 7/4/2025) Description and review of Fuji Sacramento, an upscale Japanese restaurant located on Broadway in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento. NEW: See “Updates” below .

Prior to attending a performance at B Street Theatre, four friends and I had dinner at Fuji Sacramento. It was the first time any of us had been there, but it came highly recommended by two other friends of mine.

Location

Fuji Sacramento is located on 13th & Broadway in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento.  The previous tenant of the building was the Iron Grill.

See related blog post: Iron Grill

What I did not discover until just prior to dinner, is that Fuji Sacramento is housed in the same building that had housed a long-gone but well-loved family-owned restaurant named “Fuji”.  The new restaurant, which opened in December of 2023 has different owners, but they reportedly approached and received the blessing of the family of the original Fuji restaurant to use the name.

I had never patronized the old Fuji restaurant, but one of my dinner companions had and she remembered it fondly.

Parking

In addition of street parking, Fuji Sacramento has a parking lot, a big plus.  The parking lot is located on the back portion of the lot across 13th Street (behind the Asian Food Market).  The lot entrance has two green “Fuji” signs on either side.

I noticed a security guard outside the restaurant who appeared to be keeping an eye on both the exterior of the restaurant and the parking lot. Another big plus.

The interior of the restaurant is dramatically different from that of the Iron Grill.  The décor is light and modern, with tasteful artwork on the walls. When you enter the good sized bar is to your left, with the dining area on the right.

Happy Hour Menu

Three of us arrived at the restaurant during Happy Hour (3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.), so we took advantage of the offerings on the Happy Hour menu.  The beverage menu offers a nice selection of beers, wines, and craft cocktails.  My House Chardonnay was $6, and the pour was generous.

The food menu offers a nice selection of street foods as well as a raw bar and a variety of maki (aka sushi rolls). Our party ordered a number of dishes.

Review

I did not try the poke tacos (rainbow poke + sesame + teriyaki + sunomono + carrot + wonton shell) ($13) but the dish was said to be very tasty.

I shared the following with one of my friends:

  • Fuji mame (sauteed edamame + onion + garlic + jalapeno) ($7)
  • Lumpia (crispy chicken + veggies + house sweet chili) ($8)
  • Yakiniku ribs (pork rib stack & house BBQ glaze) ($11)

The ribs were very tender and meaty, and the glaze not overtly sweet. The crispy lumpia were complemented by the house sweet chili which had just a hint of “heat.”  One friend said the lumpia were the best she had ever had. The sauteed edamame (served as requested without the jalapeno) were addictive, and I must admit that I ended the meal with a rather large pile of empty edamame shells on my plate.

Two friends who arrived after Happy Hour ordered from the regular menu.  They enjoyed the Fish and Chips ($21) and the 7-piece sashimi (chef’s choice) plate ($21), as well as a green salad ($9) that was dressed with a dressing that received high marks.

Service

The service provided by Fuji staff was first class.  Our cheerful waitress checked in with us prior to the end of Happy Hour to inquire as to whether we would like to order anything else before it ended.  She also checked in with us to make sure that everything was to our liking.

We were seated at a table for four, and when we advised her that we had just found out an additional person would be joining us that was not a problem.  Two staff members immediately moved a table for two to add to ours in preparation for their arrival.

To Sum Up

To sum up, the overall experience at Fuji Sacramento was a very positive one.  I am already planning my next visit so that I can try more of the delicious sounding menu items.

Fuji Happy Hour

(12/5/2024) A friend and I recently stopped by Fuji Sacramento for Happy Hour.  It was a Monday, and we planned to take advantage of the Monday 1/2 off  (the regular price of) street food special.

Upon arrival, we decided to sit at the bar, where we each ordered a glass of wine to start – a glass of the house Chardonnay ($6) for me and a glass of the Mondavi Merlot ($8) for my friend.

We decided to order three street food items what neither of us had previously tried: Garlic Green Beans (sesame + garlic +butter); Macadamia Shrimp (crispy prawns + house honey glaze + macadamia nut + green onion); and, Gyoza (pork & veggie).

We chatted sipping our beverages, and it was not too long before our first dish, the garlic green beans arrived.  The green beans were heavy on the garlic and had a nice crunch. We both enjoyed them as we took our time picking up and eating individual green beans with our chop sticks.

Next up, the Pork & Veggie Gyoza and the Macadamia Shrimp.  The gyoza were tasty, but the shrimp took the top prize. It was a real taste treat.

Our bartender became really busy as the crowd increased, but he took good care of us throughout.

To sum up, another good experience at Fuji.  I will be back!

Updates

(7/4/2025)  Chef Taka Watanabe (Ju Hachi/Taka’s Sushi) recently announced that he is joining Fuji’s.  He is also launching “Taka’s Tuesday’s”, an evening featuring a small menu of  fan favorite Taka’s Sushi dishes.
