(Last UPDATED 4/14/2023) Description and review of GoatHouse Brewing Company, a “farm-to-tap” brewery and tasting room located in Lincoln, CA.
Members of the Renaissance Society “A Cooks Tour of Sacramento” class recently made a weekday visit to GoatHouse Brewing Company for a beer tasting and picnic lunch. This semester we are studying the Sacramento craft beer scene.

It was a beautiful day to visit the brewery and tasting room, both of which are contained within a converted barn. Ample seating is located inside and out on long picnic tables. Outside, an overhead trellis with ceiling fans provides partial protection from the sun and a breeze on hot days.

About GoatHouse Brewing Company
The brewery uses locally sourced ingredients in their craft beer – including hops grown onsite, and fruit from their orchards. Partnering with a local beekeeper, honey harvested on the farm is another key ingredient utilized in their beer. And yes, there are goats!
Twenty different varietals of hops are grown at the GoatHouse Brewing Company. The hops had already been harvested prior to our visit, and the goats were busy cleaning up the nearby hop field under the watchful eye of Rory, the guard donkey.
GoatHouse Brewing Company is owned and operated by Michael and Catherine Johnson, Bay Area transplants. Michael took the time to give us an overview of the operation, the seasonal beers brewed, and the beers we were about to sample. He also introduced us to Georgia, the family dog.
If you plan to visit GoatHouse Brewing Company on Saturday or Sunday you may want to check out their website to see what food-truck will be visiting that particular day. You can both enjoy a beer onsite and/or take a “growler” full of your favorite home with you.
Review
During our visit we sampled four tasty beers:
- Belgo Butta – Unfiltered Belgian Golden Ale with fresh GoatHouse Cascade hops
- Brother Darryl – A high gravity Belgian Dark Ale with notes of dark Belgian candy, raisins, and Belgian goodness
- Darkside – A stout (available year-round)
- A Baracus – A Bourbon Barrel aged Red Ale
All four were what I would describe as “smooth” – something I have discovered is important to my enjoyment of a beer.
While we sipped our beers we also enjoyed a picnic lunch the coordinators of A Cooks Tour of Sacramento had brought along – feasting on chicken, salads, and other assorted goodies.
Finally, kudos to GoatHouse Brewing Company for coming in #3 in the 2018 Sacramento A-List Awards category of Best Local Brewery.
