Description and review of lunch at Iron Horse Tavern, located at 15th and R Streets on the R Street Corridor in Midtown Sacramento.
Two friends from the Bay Area were visiting me, and we decided to head over to the R Street Corridor to have lunch and check out the nearby Wide Open Walls murals in progress. It is always interesting to watch the artists work.

It was a beautiful day with a light breeze and our plan was to dine outdoors. My thought had been to go to Mas Taco Bar, but when we arrived their outdoor patio was fully occupied. No problem, we simply went next door to Iron Horse Tavern as we could see there was outdoor seating available. Both restaurants are owned by the Wong Brothers.

We were seated on the Iron Horse Tavern outdoor patio in short order. The patio is quite large and I noticed that strategically placed around the patio were what appeared to be very large a/c units to keep patrons comfortable on hot days.
Menu/Review
After that, we took our time looking over the menu. Iron Horse Tavern has an extensive menu so I was confident that each of us would find something that appealed to us.

One friend was really hungry. As a result, he ordered the Loco Moco (two seasoned hamburger patties, brown gravy, lop cheung fried rice, sunny side up eggs) ($16.25). The Loco Moco is found on the menu under “Bigger” – and they are not kidding! Despite being very hungry he could only finish about half of his meal.

The other friend asked our server about the salmon salad and was told that it had been newly added to the menu – and that it was very popular. It is so new to the menu that it is not listed online so I can’t describe it in detail. I can tell you that my friend enjoyed it greatly and commented on the generous portions of the various ingredients which included salad greens, cherry tomatoes, small potatoes, and green beans. She also commented very favorably on the salad dressing.

I ordered the Santa Fe Chicken Salad (black beans, corn, crispy flour tortilla, peppers, red cabbage, jicama, avocado, pepper jack cheese, chipotle ranch dressing) ($13.25), which I enjoyed. The chicken was moist and the salad was chock full of the various other ingredients. It was also lightly dressed – something I always appreciate.
After taking our time and enjoying our lunch, we set out to stroll the R Street Corridor and take in the sights. Every time I visit the R Street Corridor there always seems to be something new to see!
