Description of the Limelight Bar and Cafe, a bar-cafe-cardroom located on Alhambra Blvd. in East Sacramento celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year.
Two friends and I recently had lunch at the Limelight Bar and Cafe. It was a weekday, and we planned to take advantage of the Savor East Sac (September 6-15, 2019) special being offered – a $6 “Anniversary Burger” to celebrate the Limelight’s 60th Anniversary.
We arrived prior to noon and had no problem parking in the lot in front. There is also parking in the back, and if it is really busy there is always street parking or the Safeway parking lot right across the street.
The Limelight is actually good sized. The bar area is long and somewhat narrow, with an additional dining area in the next room. Next to that room is a covered patio – a popular place to have brunch on a nice weekend. Then, of course, there is also the cardroom – which I admit I have never looked at closely.
We walked in the side door past the cardroom and into the bar. We decided to have lunch in the bar area and seated ourselves. A few people were seated at the long bar when we arrived chatting with the bartender. We were the first to have arrived for lunch.

I had heard that the Limelight had recently changed hands – but I do not know the details. I did, however, discover when I went online afterwards that a new name and website are in the works. The Limelight’s new name is (or will be) the “Limelight Social Club” offering a cafe, cocktails and cards.
It will be interesting to see if and how the Limelight might change. The menu now offers what one would call American bar food – but I have always thought the food is pretty good.
Anniversary Burger
Our waiter, a community college student, appeared to be rather new – but he was pleasant and willing to check with the chef more than once so that he could answer our questions about the “Anniversary Burger”.
We each ordered the $6 Anniversary Burger, medium-rare. The burger did not include a side, so we ordered a large fries ($5) to share. The good-sized burger included a choice of cheese, as well as lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce. The patty was done just right, and we all agreed the burger was yummy and a really good deal. The fries were also tasty. (Note: I was hungry and forgot to take a picture of my burger until it was half-finished!)
To Sum Up
The Limelight also has a good Happy Hour, Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Offered during Happy Hour is a $5 small plate menu and $1 off drinks.
