(Last Updated 7/15/2023) Description and review of Midtown Bakery, a small batch boutique bakery located on J Street in Midtown Sacramento. NEW: See Midtown Bakery Revisited and Update below.
Midtown Bakery had been on my list of places to try since it first opened in March. Finally, I stopped by the shop this past weekend. The bakery is open two days a week, on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

I had read about Angela Harris and her husband Thomas, who assists her. Baking is a passion for Angela, and opening a bakery is her dream come true.
Midtown Bakery
On Saturday morning I arrived at Midtown Bakery around 9:00 a.m. My goal was to get there earlier than later, as when the shop sells out of baked goods it simply closes early.
I knew the entrance to the shop is on 23rd Street, despite its J Street address. At that time in the morning parking nearby on J Street posed no problem.
The shop is small – with an emphasis on “small”. A few moments after I entered, Thomas emerged from a doorway marked “employees only” carrying a freshly baked and sliced Caramel Banana Cake to place in the display case.
As we discussed the offerings on display, Thomas mentioned that they only have one oven, and baked goods are added to the display case as each small batch comes out of the oven.

Both sweet and savory items caught my eye, and rather than one or the other I decided to try one of each. My choice for “sweet” that morning was a French Puff (light butter muffin doused in melted butter and rolled in cinnamon and sugar) ($2.75). My “savory” choice was a Sweet and Savory Corn Muffin (with roasted corn, jalapenos, chives, cheddar cheese and topped with bacon and cheddar cheese) ($4.25).

The French Puff was thoroughly enjoyed with a cup of coffee later that morning, and the Sweet and Savory Corn Muffin was the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of home-made chili that evening.
To sum up, I look forward to visiting Midtown Bakery again soon to try some of their other offerings.

Midtown Bakery Revisited

(1/12/2022) A friend and I went strolling around Midtown on a recent Sunday afternoon to check out the shops. I mentioned at one point that we were approaching Midtown Bakery and asked if she wanted to stop in. I was pleased to have the opportunity to introduce her this newish bakery.
Having enjoyed the French Puff on my previous visit, I could not resist ordering one this visit as well. I also ordered a Ginger and Molasses Cookie (molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, crystallized ginger pieces) ($3). Both the flavor of molasses and ginger can be a bit overwhelming at times, but neither flavor dominated the other. In other words, it was a perfect marriage of the two and made for a delicious cookie. If you like molasses and ginger you might want to give it a try.

Update
(7/15/2023) Sactown Magazine has named the Uptown Bakery French Puff muffin the “best” in Sacramento. I agree!
