(Last Updated 2/7/2023) Description and review of Midtown Sushi, a Japanese restaurant serving up California-style sushi in Midtown Sacramento. NEW: See “Update” below.
Original Blog Post
Midtown Sushi has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while, so when I saw that they had joined the list of restaurants participating in the 2021 Dine Downtown at the last minute I decided now was as good a time as ever.

Midtown Sushi Review
Ordering on-line was very easy – I clicked on the Dine Downtown menu and was presented with the choices for the three courses. At the same time, I chose the time I wanted to pick-up my meal.

My choices for dinner that evening:
- Sweet & Sour Mushrooms (Fried oyster mushrooms tossed in house-made sweet and sour sauce and garnished with green onions)
- M-N-M (Tempura shrimp and spicy tuna with avocado, unagi, masago & sweet and spicy sauce)
- Chicken Teriyaki (served with a side of rice)
When I arrived, a sign outside the front door instructed those picking up takeout to remain there. I thought that was very smart, as COVID-19 cases are surging after the recent holidays. I recall well how small the interior of the restaurant, previously Lou’s Sushi, is.

Note: When you are ordering the Midtown Sushi website also offers an option to have your order delivered to your car.
It did not take long before I was noticed, and staff came to the door. My order was ready, and was bagged up in short order.
Once home, I plated each of the three courses noting that there was plenty to serve two. As a result, I was looking forward to having the leftovers for lunch the next day.
Sweet & Sour Mushrooms
The Sweet & Sour Mushrooms surprised me as they packed a bit of a kick (as in spicy hot). It was not so hot that it interfered with my enjoyment. However, I was thankful for the white rice that came with the Teriyaki Chicken as that helped tone the heat down.
M-N-M Roll

The M-N-M roll was very tasty. It was, as you can see from the accompanying photo, also a visual treat. While the description of the sauce used in the dish was “sweet and spicy” I did not find it spicy hot.
Teriyaki Chicken

And last, but not least, the Teriyaki Chicken was tender and infused with the flavorful Teriyaki sauce.
To Sum Up
To sum up, I enjoyed each of the three courses and will definitely return to Midtown Sushi to try some of their other offerings.

Update
(2/7/2023) The Sacramento Bee reported recently that Midtown Sushi has permanently closed its doors! The reason for the closure is unknown. Owner Dan Walsh did not apply for renewal of the restaurants liquor license, which expired August 31, 2022. As a result, the liquor license was revoked on December 15. Another sure sign – the Midtown Sushi website is no longer operative.
Sacramento vegans and vegetarians, as well as those of us who are not, will miss Midtown Sushi.
