Description and review of Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar, located in Midtown Sacramento in the East End Lofts Building.

Prior to a recent performance at Music Circus, two friends and I dined at nearby Mikuni.  It had been a long time since I had last been there, so I was glad to second the suggestion when it was made.

Mikuni is a local chain restaurant, serving locations throughout the greater Sacramento area.

Mikuni does not take reservations, but we were early enough that we were confident that it should not be an issue. The venue is large with seating at the bar, the good-sized open space main dining area, and upstairs.  The venue is attractively decorated, and the vibe is casual and fun.

We were greeted warmly upon arrival, and soon seated in the upstairs dining area.  From my experience, I have always found Mikuni staff to be both friendly and attentive.

Before we settled on the menu, we each ordered a beverage.  White wine for me, while one friend ordered a mixed drink and the other sake.

Menu

The Mikuni menu provides a wide variety of choices, but we were drawn to the “2 for $70” option (choice of 1 appetizer, 1 kitchen plate, 2 sushi rolls and 1 dessert).  It was a good choice as we all left the table comfortably full.

Our 2 for $70 choices were:

  • BBQ White Tuna (grilled rare white tuna, spicy BBQ red or white sauce with green onion) (appetizer); Note: See photo above.
  • Ginger Pork served with side salad and white rice (thinly sliced pork sauteed with onion and ginger sauce) (kitchen plate);
  • 2 sushi rolls (Annie Roll and Rainbow Roll)
  • Chocolate lava cake

To Sum Up

To sum up, we all enjoyed our meal that evening.  As expected, the fish was of high quality, each dish was flavorful, and the presentation beautiful. While restaurants come and go, Mikuni has certainly passed the test of time.
