Description and review of the New Kathmandu Kitchen, an Indian and Nepalese restaurant located in East Sacramento.
The New Kathmandu Kitchen opened towards the end of May, not long after Junoon Flavors of India closed. An injury and the required extended recovery period prompted the owner of Junoon to sell the business to new owners Suman Khadka and Sushil Kuikel.

In the mood for something different for lunch, I decided to walk over to the New Kathmandu Kitchen and check it out.
The restaurant does not have a website, but there is a menu online for on-line ordering.
Note: New Kathmandu Kitchen is offering a 15% discount on phone orders and dine in until June 30.
When I entered, I was greeted by a welcoming young woman who provided me with a menu, a glass of water and a seat while I perused the menu.
Menu
The Kathmandu Kitchen menu offers a variety of:
- Appetizers
- Soup & Salad
- Biryani
- Naan
- Curries (vegetable, chicken, lamb, seafood)
- Tandoori
- Desserts
- Beverages
The small list of “Kitchen Specials” caught my eye. I inquired about the Chicken Chowmein (noodles, chicken and vegetables) ($14.95) and was told that it was a Nepalese dish. I decided to try it.
It did not take an unduly long time before I was on my way home, lunch in hand.
Review
The Chicken Chowmein consisted of long narrow/flat noodles mixed with pieces of chicken and vegetables (onion, carrots, cabbage, red bell pepper). While there was a generous amount of tender chicken in the dish, the same could not be said for the vegetables.
I had neglected to ask about the level of “heat” of the dish, but that was definitely not a problem. In fact, I found the sauce used to dress the dish rather bland.
After finishing my lunch that day, I had enough left over for at least one more meal.
To Sum Up
To sum up, I definitely intend to visit the New Kathmandu Kitchen again – but next time I will order some of the more traditional Indian dishes I am familiar with.
