Description and review of Orphan Breakfast House, located in the McKinley Park neighborhood of East Sacramento.
Orphan Breakfast House, located in a quiet residential neighborhood, is known for its “healthy” breakfast, brunch and lunch menu as well as its pour over coffee. The restaurant is part of the “Naked Coffee” family.
Orphan can best be described as a small, cozy coffee house/cafe. Open 365 days of the year, breakfast is served 7:00 a.m. to closing time at 2:00 p.m. On weekends you will want to get there early! Otherwise, expect a wait. On weekdays lunch is served Monday thru Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Check your wallet in advance because Orphan is “cash only”. However, not all is lost if you are caught short as there is an ATM on the premises. Note: Sales tax is included in the price of your meal.
Orphan has a very interesting menu, a blending of traditional, Latin and Asian. The menu is vegetarian and vegan (ask for the vegan menu) friendly and there are also gluten-free options.
I have enjoyed brunch previously at Orphan, but I was in the mood for lunch on the weekday I decided to do “take out”. While restaurants in Sacramento are now allowed to serve indoor and outdoor diners (in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions), I personally am not yet ready to “dine in”.
Orphan Lunch Menu
The lunch menu includes a variety of salads, sandwiches and Asian and Latin influenced dishes. Several of the menu items sounded very appealing to me, but I was in the mood for a sandwich.
The Chicken Asada Sandwich (grilled chicken, jack cheese, lettuce, avocado and mayo with a side of salsa ($13) sounded good to me. Given a choice of bread I opted for the rosemary bread. Lunch comes with a choice of a side salad or rosemary potatoes, which was a no-brainer for me. I ordered the rosemary potatoes as I have enjoyed them at brunch on previous visits.
The rosemary potatoes did not disappoint. The Chicken Asada Sandwich was tasty, with a generous amount of moist and flavorful chicken.
Orphan Breakfast House Parking
Finally, I must mention parking. Located in a residential neighborhood, parking is somewhat limited. If you park on the streets nearby be sure to pay attention to the signage, or you risk getting a parking ticket.
Orphan does have a small parking lot, but when I arrived to pick up my order half of the parking lot had tables strategically placed at an appropriate COVID-19 distance and the tables were largely full. There is also a very small outdoor patio in front on C Street.
Lucky for me I can easily walk to Orphan so parking is never a problem.
