Description of Poppy by Mama Kim, an upscale café located in the Sutter Park neighborhood of East Sacramento.
Poppy is located in East Sacramento’s newest neighborhood – Sutter Park. The new infill neighborhood was built on the site of the old Sutter Memorial Hospital (aka Sacramento’s “baby hospital”).

Poppy by Mama Kim
Scott opened Poppy in the spring of 2021, taking a chance opening a new restaurant during the ongoing pandemic with its related challenges.
A large colorful poppy mural graces the side of the building next to the outdoor patio. Orange umbrella’s on the patio complement the mural.
A friend and I went to Poppy for brunch of a recent Saturday. It was a beautiful day, one of the first in a while as Sacramento had been sweltering during a string of record-breaking triple digit days.
We arrived at Poppy not long after the café opened, and were pleased to find some tables open on the small patio. A couple were dining indoors when we entered. We asked to be seated outside, and were told to seat ourselves and they would be out shortly.
Poppy by Mama Kim Menu
It was only a minute before our server arrived providing us with menus. We both decided to start our meal with coffee ($3.00) which was served in a large mug. It was very good. We also each ordered a Mimosa ($9) to be served with our meal.
We sipped our coffee while we looked over the brunch special menu. The weekday and weekend menu changes weekly.
The menu at Poppy is limited – but everything on the creative menu sounded delicious!
My friend ordered the Croque Madame (two eggs over medium, choice of breakfast potatoes or side salad) ($18). I ordered the Banger and Eggs, (English banger sausage, two eggs over medium, breakfast potatoes, grilled onions) ($19).
We were both extremely happy with our choices. Expertly prepared quality ingredients and attention to visual appeal – what more could anyone ask for? Additionally, both of us commented favorably on the breakfast potatoes.
My “bangers” were accompanied by a really tasty mustard. I also found the accompanying salad greens with green apple and blackberries refreshing.
A couple were seated nearby, and I could not help but notice the King Crab Eggs Benedict when it arrived at their table. A very hefty portion of crab meat topped the cheddar chive biscuit upon which it was served. Something to think about for the future.
We found the Poppy staff to be friendly and helpful. Matthew, our server, took very good care of us thus helping to make this first visit most enjoyable.
To Sum Up
To sum up, I look forward to dining again soon at Poppy. It is a great addition to the East Sacramento dining scene!
