Description and review of the Silt Wine Company and its tasting room, located in the Sacramento River Delta community of Clarksburg, CA.
The last stop on the SacTown Bites Taste of the Delta Tour was Silt Wine Company. Previous stops on the tour that day were Greene & Hemly, a grower/packer/shipper of pears and apples, Hemly Cider, an on-farm cider taproom and production facility, and Husick’s Taphouse where we lunched.

Silt Wine Company
After turning onto Babel Slough Road from South River Road, my friend and I kept a lookout for flowers and a small sign on the right side of the road – the entrance to Silt Wine Company.
After driving past the barn and parking, we made our way to the tasting room bar where we met up with the other members of our small group tour.
Shannon Ogilvie, the Hospitality Director, greeted us and led us to our reserved table in the back room. We shared the room with a beautiful antique vehicle I had noticed through the open barn door when we arrived.
The Silt Wine Company tasting room is very spacious and attractive. Scattered around were several small groups of two or three enjoying a glass of wine. Adjacent to the tasting room there is a good-sized outdoor garden area – perfect for outdoor events.
The Silt Wine Company is owned by Phil and David Ogilvie and Tom Merwin of Merwin Vineyards. Phil, the Chief Financial Officer, is married to Shannon. David is the Director of Production. Tom is identified as in charge of “strategy”.
Both the Ogilvie and Merwin families have deep roots in the Clarksburg area.
All the Silt Wine Company wines are crafted from grapes grown in family-owned vineyards in the Clarksburg AVA.
The “silt” in the name of the winery pays homage to the rich river bottom soils in which its grapes are grown.
Wine Tasting
Shannon, who is studying to become a sommelier, was charming and very knowledgeable. As she poured each tasting she described the wine and related details of interest, including food pairings.
Wines tasted that day were:
- Sparkling Chenin Blanc – Charmat
- Sauvignon Blanc (2020)
- Albarino (2020)
- Gewurztraminer (2020)
- Pinot Noir (2016)
- Cabernet Franc (2018)
The wine grapes of the wines sampled were produced by Wilson Vineyards, Utter Ranch; Merwin Vineyards Home Ranch; and, Screeching Owl Vineyards.
I was very impressed by the quality of the wines we sampled that day. While I am not a fan of gewurztraminer, I thought that it was the best wine of that varietal I have tasted to date.
Before we left that day my companion signed up for the wine club!
Food Pairings
During the tasting we were also treated to a selection of nibbles that complemented the wines. Two kinds of cheese, including French Brie, were accompanied by two types of flatbread crackers. The plate also included blackberry-vanilla jam, orange and fig spread, and a Mexican-style dark chocolate.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo before I helped myself to the cheese and crackers. I hate when that happens! Heather, the owner of SacTown Bites, was good enough to share a photo with me.
To Sum Up
As we left Silt Wine Company to head home, my friend and I both agreed that it had been a most enjoyable day. As a new member of the Silt Wine Club, my friend is already looking forward to receiving invitations to exclusive member-only events!
