(Last UPDATED 4/10/23) Description and review of T.H.A.I. The House of Authentic Ingredients, located on H Street in East Sacramento. NEW: See “Update” and “Happy Hour” below.
After a recent neighborhood association meeting three of us decided to stop by T.H.A.I. The House of Authentic Ingredients for dinner. One friend had previously dined there, but it was the first time for the other two of us.
Everyone in the neighborhood had been keeping an eye out in anticipation of the opening of the restaurant which celebrated its “soft” opening in November, 2018. The construction seemed to take forever – but it appears at first blush that the bagel shop turned restaurant was worth waiting for.
I was impressed with both the exterior and interior of the new restaurant. The exterior now features a patio in front and another on the side of the building. A bike rack is conveniently located behind the side patio. My guess is both outdoor dining areas will get a lot of use come warmer weather.

Parking
We had parked on the street, and as we walked towards the restaurant we noticed a sign pointing to restaurant parking at the lot across the street (entrance on H Street). Very convenient and much appreciated by residents in the immediate neighborhood I am sure.
(UPDATED 3/15/19) Clarification: Parking for T.H.A.I. is in the parking lot for Salon Cuvee on the opposite side of 47th Street.
Menu/Review
The interior of T.H.A.I. is very attractive with clean modern lines. As one would expect, the restaurant is small but they did a very nice job with the space they had to work with.
Arriving as we did after our neighborhood association meeting we had missed the dinner rush – and we were greeted and seated immediately.
T.H.A.I. has a full bar and a menu of exotic drinks in addition to other beverages. I opted for a glass of wine while my companions sampled the mixed drinks.
The menu at T.H.A.I. is extensive, but it did not take us long to narrow down our choices. The menu clearly identifies the dishes that are gluten-free and vegan. Additionally, it warns that not all ingredients are listed and advises those with food allergies to speak to their server prior to ordering.

Among the three of us we ordered two noodle dishes and one curry:
- Pad Thai with Chicken (stir-fried thin rice noodle with traditional Pad Thai sauce, bean sprout, chive, egg, and crushed peanut) ($14)
- Pad Kee Mao with Beef (semi-spicy, stir-fried wide rice noodle with young green pepper, bell pepper, green bean, kaffir leaf, basil, and Thai chili) ($14)
- Kang Deang with Tilapia (red curry with cherry tomato, Thai chili, bell pepper, bamboo, basil, kaffir leaf) ($16).

I enjoyed my Pad Thai, and my friends relished their respective dishes – both of which had a spicy-hot “kick”. Since I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to “spicy” I plan to request a toned-down version if I order a spicy dish in the future.

T.H.A.I. is a bit pricy compared to other Thai restaurants in Sacramento, but the restaurant appears to have a lot going for it – location, ambiance, quality ingredients, and friendly staff. I look forward to dining at T.H.A.I. again soon to further explore the menu.

Happy Hour
(1/30/2023) Two friends and I, and our two dogs, recently enjoyed Happy Hour at T.H.A.I. We arrived at 4:00 p.m., the sun was still shining, and it was warm enough to sit outside on one of the two patios.
T.H.A.I. has a very nice Happy Hour during the week (Monday – Friday) from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Happy Hour Menu
T.H.A.I. offers a “snack” menu with $5, $6, and $7 offerings. We ordered three of the $5 snacks (Chicken & Veggie Pot Stickers, Crispy Spring Rolls and the 3 Samplers (Tom Kha Tod, Larb Tod, Hoi Jorge Puu). We also ordered one of the $7 snacks (fried calamari). All were tasty.
Beverages include $5 Singa Beer, $6 well drinks, $7 House Wine and $9 T.H.A.I. Specialty Cocktails. The T.H.A.I. House Wine (red or white) is Bogle – the the pour is generous!
When the sun started to go down, and it became colder, we called an end to Happy Hour – but vowed to return when the weather becomes warmer.
UPDATE
(11/30/2022) Two friends and I recently stopped for breakfast/lunch at THAI on a recent weekend. I suggested THAI as we were nearby and THAI has two dog friendly patios, thus my friend’s dog could join us.
The sun was shining, and it was quite comfortable sitting on the smaller patio on the side of the building.
THAI is now offering brunch on weekends. As a result, two of us ordered from the brunch menu, while the other ordered from the lunch menu.
In the mood for breakfast, the Thai Classic (2 eggs, any style, breakfast potatoes, toast and Thai sausage) ($18) appealed to one friend. She requested white toast and no potatoes. I had a taste of the Thai sausage which was both savory and sweet (in a good way). The toast was also said to be a bit sweet.
My second friend ordered the Kao Pad Subparod with chicken (pineapple friend rice with choice of meat, tofu or mixed veggies) ($18). To say that the portion was generous is an understatement, and he was happy to have tasty leftovers to take home.
The Fried Chicken Sandwich (Tempura thigh, red onion, cucumber) ($18) was my choice – and a very good one I might add. I enjoyed every bite!
To Sum Up
To sum up, the friendly service and delicious food at THAI makes for a winning combo – which is why I go back again and again.

After we had gone there for dinner, I went back with a friend for lunch and got the red curry. It is so good, but really spicy. It is my new favorite dish.
“really spicy” – I will keep that in mind!
