Overview of a SacTown Bites “Taste of the Delta Tour”, a fun and informative partial-day tour in and around the Courtland area of the Sacramento River Delta.
A friend and I recently joined a SacTown Bites small group tour of several varied businesses located in the nearby Sacramento River Delta. I had first met Heather, the owner of SacTown Bites, when my daughter and I took her SacTown Midtown Tour in January of 2020. Shortly afterwards, the COVID-19 pandemic turned our world upside down.

After the tour in 2020, I signed up for the SacTown Bites e-mail list. As a result, I followed Heather’s activities as she changed her business model due to COVID-19.
Activities such as the SacBites Midtown Tour were not viable at the time, so Heather shifted her focus to gift boxes that feature the bounty of local farms and ranches. Luckily, the Sacramento region is blessed in that regard.
Fast forward to August 2021, nineteen months later. Heather had started offering SacTown Bites tours again, this time with an emphasis on tours that largely take place outdoors.
Tours such as the Taste of the Delta Tour sounded to be as safe an activity as one could hope for under the circumstances. “Under the circumstances” is in reference to the ongoing surges of COVID-19 infections largely due the Delta variant. Get vaccinated folks!
A day trip was just what a friend and I needed!
The air quality in the Sacramento Region has been very poor recently as we have several devastating fires burning in Northern California. My hope was that the air quality in the nearby Sacramento River Delta would be a bit better, and it did seem to be.
Taste of the Delta Tour Itinerary
Businesses visited on the Taste of the Delta Tour were:
- Greene & Hemly (grower/packer/shipper of pears, apples and cherries) Now being managed by the sixth generation of the Hemly family.
- Hemly Cider (pear and apple cider) the brainchild of a Hemly daughter-in-law.
- Husick’s Taphouse (lunch) A popular restaurant/bar located on S River Road.
- Silt Wine Company (wine tasting accompanied by cheese, jam, crackers and chocolate that complemented the wines tasted).
To Sum Up
To sum up, my friend and I had a delightful day on the SacTown Bites Taste of the Delta Tour. Every detail of the tour was well planned and executed. Heather is a gracious host who ensured that everyone enjoyed themselves. Additionally, the people we met at each of the businesses were generous with their time while sharing their knowledge and expertise. We are already planning to go on another SacTown Bites tour soon.
