Description and review of The Golden Pineapple, a Hawaiian-California fusion restaurant located in the Marshall-New Era neighborhood of Sacramento.
For months I have periodically driven past what had been Sunny’s Q corner market, wondering what would be going into the building that was in the process of being renovated. Over the Memorial Day weekend The Golden Pineapple opened its doors.

A friend and I dropped by the next week to check The Golden Pineapple out. Once inside we noted only a few tables for two around the perimeter of the deli side of the restaurant. The other half of the building houses the Hawaiian side of the business. The Golden Pineapple is clearly geared towards take-out, although we chose to dine in.
The staff was welcoming and friendly, and happy to explain the business model.
We observed patrons, who had obviously ordered online, arriving to pick up their order. For our part, we placed and paid for our orders via a menu screen on the wall, which I prefer over using a QR Code menu on a cell phone.

You will be called up to the counter to pick up your order on the deli side of the restaurant when it is ready, regardless of what you ordered.
The Golden Pineapple Menu
Hawaiian
The Hawaiian menu includes a plate lunch of varied BBQ meats, served with Hawaiian Mac Salad and Steamed Rice, as well as Rice Bowls, Ramen, and Poke.
California
The California deli menu offers assorted cold and hot deli sandwiches, as well as salads and wraps. You can also “build a sami” ($14) with a choice of bread/rolls, wraps, spreads, protein, cheese and any extras desired such as extra cheese ($1).
Beverages include fountain drinks ($4/$5), and coconut water ($3).
Review

My friend chose to order from the Hawaiian side of the menu. She ordered the BBQ Beef lunch plate served with the Mac Salad and Steamed Rice ($18), which she enjoyed. The beef was flavorful and tender, and the portion generous. When I inquired about the Mac Salad, she stated that it was the typical Hawaiian Mac Salad i.e. flavorless. She intended to “doctor” it up before she ate the leftovers for dinner.

My choice was one of The Golden Pineapple signature sandwiches – the Kalua Pork Sami (Kalua port, kimchi aioli, cabbage slaw, crispy shallots ($14.)
The Kalua Pork Sami was a mixed bag. The pork was tasty, but the roll was out of proportion – too much bread (or too little pork). I would order it again after checking on the availability of rolls not quite so hefty.
As we sat eating our meal my friend, looking at her receipt, pointed out that The Golden Pineapple is apparently owned by the owners of Kupros Craft House.

To Sum Up
To sum up, given the traffic in and out of the business while we dined, it appears that The Golden Pineapple is off to a good start!
