(Last UPDATED 5/17/2023) Description and review of East Village Bookshop, a newly-opened independent bookstore located in East Sacramento. NEW: See “Snapshot” below.
Residents of the McKinley Park neighborhood have been looking forward to the opening of the East Village Bookshop ever since it became known a bookstore was moving into the neighborhood. East Village Bookshop is located in the small strip mall at McKinley Blvd. and 36th Street. The previous tenant had been the McKinley Park Hair Company.
East Village Bookshop
The East Village Bookshop opened earlier this month. I stopped by recently to check it out. The shop is owned by Sabrina Nishiyima, with whom I had the opportunity to chat. She and her family live nearby in the neighborhood. East Village Bookshop is her first retail venture.

The bookstore is very attractive. I would describe it as cheerful, bright and airy. There are seating areas strategically placed around for both adults and children.
The bookshop carries a selection of new releases in fiction, non-fiction, local interest, cooking, crafts, children’s, young adult, and classics. Before entering the store I noted several book racks outside the door, which included some used books.
Also available: popsicles, cold drinks, and coffee. Additionally, Sabrina has assorted outdoor games available that can to be loaned out at no charge.
East Village Bookshop is affiliated with Bookshop, an online bookstore. Patrons can order anything not in stock at East Village Bookshop to be delivered to their door.
A Bit About Bookshop
Bookshop was founded in January 2020. It is a collaboration between publisher Andy Hunter, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) and book wholesaler and distributor Ingram Content Group.
According to the Bookshop website, the mission of the organization is to financially support local, independent bookstores.
Bookshop is a benefit corporation, a type of for-profit corporate entity that includes positive impact on society, workers, the community and the environment in addition to profit as its legally defined goals.
How Does Bookshop Work?
Bookshop-affiliated independent bookstores that sell books online utilizing Bookshop will receive the full profit (% of the cover price) made from the order. Otherwise, 10% of the profits from Bookshop online orders will be deposited in an earnings pool. Funds in the earnings pool will be distributed every six months equally among independent bookstores.
Other Sacramento Bookshop-affiliated Bookstores (as of 6/15/2021):
- Capital Books, 1011 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95814
- Beers Books, 915 S Street, Sacramento, CA 95811
- Crawford’s Books, 5301 Freeport Blvd., #200, Sacramento, CA 95822
To Sum Up
First of all, if the thought occurred to you that Bookshop.org was conceived to take market-share away from Amazon you are not off target.
Most importantly, if you want to support local independent bookstores consider the following (in this order):
- Purchasing direct from the independent bookstore (in person or from the business online store – if that option is available). East Village Bookshop, for example, does not at this time have an online store.
- Purchasing books online from local independent bookstores affiliated with Bookshop.org. via the bookstore link.
- Purchasing books directly from Bookshop.org
To sum up, East Village Bookshop is a great addition to the East Sacramento McKinley Park neighborhood! I look forward to stopping by again soon.
