Description of Shelf, a shared retail space and community for local makers and creatives that opened October 2018 in Downtown Commons (DOCO).
Recently I dropped by Shelf, an innovative and exciting new retail store that showcases the handiwork of Sacramento area makers and creatives. The store is located on the ground level of Downtown Commons (DOCO) across the way from Macy’s.
I had previously read about Shelf, and I love the concept behind it – to provide affordable rental space for local makers and creatives to offer their wares to the public.
Moments after entering Shelf I was greeted by William Mendoza who was manning the store. William and Gabriela Mendoza are the co-founders of this new venture.

I was surprised with the size of the space – it is almost 2,000 square feet. The room is light filled, and the wares are attractively arranged on both the shelves lining the wall and the tables set in the middle of the room.
There was quite a wide variety of hand-crafted and unique items being offered for sale. I had noted upon entering that the store was featuring the handiwork of 85 local makers and creatives! The day I was there the inventory included mugs and vases, silk screens, purses, scarfs, jewelry, paper goods, baskets and skin care products.
Making a circuit of the room I looked over the various items offered for sale. While I did not make a purchase that day I did make a mental note of one thing is particular that I intend to return for.
To sum up, Shelf is clearly one of those stores that one will want to stop by and visit often. It is now on my list of places to check out when I am looking for a unique hand-crafted gift.

(11/29/19) Shelf has closed its doors at its Downtown Sacramento DOCO store – but a Shelf Facebook post appears to indicate that the closure may be temporary. Perhaps a move to another (less expensive) location? Stay tuned!
Have you visited Shelf? What would you add?
