(UPDATED 11/23/18) To say that the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour is wildly popular is an understatement! This year was the 44th year of this three-day annual event that benefits the students of the Sacred Heart Parish School.
It had been a number of years since I last went on the self-guided Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour. Taking the tour is an excellent way to start getting into the spirit of the holidays. Now retired, I decided to go on the first day – Friday, December 1.
The six homes featured on the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour are generally located in the Fab 40’s – similar to the East Sacramento Garden Tour held each year over the Mother’s Day weekend. My plan of action was to walk to the home most distant, and then make my way towards home – just as my daughter and I have done over the years on Mother’s Day. Local designers are tapped to decorate each home on the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour. Attendees not only have the opportunity to enjoy the beautifully decorated homes, but also to make note of the many clever decorating ideas utilized that can be replicated at home.
The day started out overcast, but the sun was out when I started to make my way to 47th Street. It was not only a beautiful day, but on my walk I had the opportunity to enjoy the many trees sporting fall foliage and the homes along the way all decked out for the holidays.
When I arrived at the 47th Street home there was a line to enter – and the same was true for each home on the tour. However, I was in no hurry and the wait was never very long. The 47th Street home (off of Folsom Blvd.), a Tudor-style home, had a Nutcracker Ballet themed design. The kitchen counter was “dressed” in a pink tutu that extended to the floor.
The next two homes on the tour were on 42nd Street. I, however, made a point of first taking a small detour on 44th Street to take a picture of the beautiful “blue” home that was featured in the movie “Lady Bird”. Lady Bird was both written and directed by Sacramento-native Greta Gerwig. See related post: Lady Bird – A Sacramento Love Letter
On 42nd Street the first home I visited was a bungalow-style home. On the front porch a fiddle player was playing Christmas music, and the interior decoration was designed to evoke a simple county Christmas.
The second home on 42nd Street has an interesting backstory – it was modeled after a train depot for the original owners. The home was decorated throughout with all things white and cream.
The next two homes were both located on 40th Street. The first home, a remodeled Craftsman-style home, had a winter sleigh in the front yard and the interior was decorated in classic holiday colors. The second home on 40th Street was a remodeled cottage. The theme of the décor was “California Christmas” with some added sparkle.
The last home on my self-guided tour was a Cottage-style home on 39th Street. I had walked by the home on my way to 47th Street knowing that it would be my last stop. I was glad to see that the length of the line was much shorter than earlier in the day.
After leaving the 39th Street home I continued down 39th Street and stopped by the Sacred Heart Parish School to visit the Holiday Cafe and Boutique before heading home. Both the cafe and boutique appeared to be doing a brisk business.
All-in-all it, I found the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour to be a very pleasant way to spend part of a beautiful sunny day in Sacramento – with the added bonus of getting in some exercise.
