On Saturday, January 20, I joined the estimated 30,000 women, men and children marching in the 2018 Women’s March Sacramento. This year there were approximately 10,000 more participants than last year’s march!

I had pulled out my pink “pussy” hat and packed my backpack the night before so I would be all set and ready to go. In addition to the basics, like water, I threw in a pair of gloves – and I was really glad the next day to have them.
It was a chilly morning, but the sun came out and the sky was blue – a perfect day for the march.

Like last year I prepaid and parked at the City Hall Parking Garage ($5) at 10th & I Streets. This year there was actually a bit of a traffic jam to get into the garage which caught me by surprise.
Unlike last year I did not arrive super early at Southside Park as I knew that the actual start of the march was 11:00 a.m. (more on that later).
As I walked towards Southside Park numerous other marchers were making their way in the same direction, many of them carrying signs. I observed a number of men who had, like the women they accompanied, donned pink caps.

I was meeting my friends and fellow “biddies” in front of the church across from the park. I walked back and forth on the sidewalk dodging people, dogs and strollers until I finally spotted them. It is sometimes a disadvantage being short.
Then the wait began. It was close to 11:30 a.m. and we had not moved an inch. While we enjoyed looking around at the many clever signs of fellow marchers, standing in place is very tiring. We were ready to go!
We were thrilled when we moved a foot or so – but then we came to a stop again. While we were at a standstill it was announced that the first marchers had just arrived at the State Capitol Building!
Shortly after that we finally started to move, and once we rounded the corner at 5th and T Streets we gained momentum. As we rounded the corner to turn on Capitol Mall the crowd started breaking up. Some marchers proceeded to join the huge crowd at the State Capitol Building to hear the speakers while others, having made their point, decided to call it a day.
According to news sources Sacramento was not the only city to have greater participation this year than last – make of that what you will.
