Description of 916 Ink, a Sacramento-based nonprofit providing creative writing workshops for Sacramento area youth. New: Ink TV.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for Sacramento nonprofits. Each nonprofit has had to pivot to the best of their ability to continue to fulfill their mission.
I first became aware of 916 Ink through my membership in the Sacramento Women’s Action Network (SWAN). SWAN was a giving circle whose mission was to help those in need and make Sacramento a better place to live. Over the years, SWAN members chose 916 Ink on more than one occasion to receive our combined donations.

About 916 Ink
916 Ink creative writing workshops give the youthful participants (grades 3 – 12) confidence in their writing abilities, and transforms them into published authors. During this creative process the youth also:
- increase literacy skills (reading/writing)
- improve vocabulary
- learn empathy
- expand communications skills
According to the 916 Ink website, since 2010 the organization has published 178 Anthologies of stories written by the youth served, including youth in foster care, experiencing homelessness, and in the juvenile justice system.
I have had the opportunity in the past to read one of the published collection of stories by these young authors, and I have to say I was touched and moved.
Ink TV
When I was recently approached and asked if I would help spread the word about 916 Ink’s latest initiative – Ink TV – I was only too glad to do so.
This free resource is now available on YouTube.
Ink TV airs every Friday at noon with a new episode. Recent episodes have included Creative Writing for Kids:
- Slime!
- Lego Storytelling
- Postcards
- Improv Games
Check out one or more of the episodes, and share the Ink TV link with family and friends whose young family members may enjoy and benefit from them. Especially during this time of COVID-19 restrictions, entertainment and education equal a winning combination!
