Description of Bankrate’s picks for the 2022 Best Places to Live in the U.S. Where does Sacramento rank?
Bankrate recently released its 2022 “Best Places to Live” list. Bankrate looked at the 100 largest metro areas and compiled its list of the top 20. Factors used to rank the list were: affordability, diversity, job market, safety, and wellness. Also identified were several “highlights” for each area.
SacramentoRevealed.com – All Things Sacramento (from a personal perspective)
Taking the #1 spot is Raleigh, NC. Bankrate ranked Raleigh:
- Affordability – 7 out of 10
- Diversity – 5 out of 10
- Job Market – 8 out of 10
- Safety – 9 out of 10
- Wellness – 7 out of 10
Highlights noted were: NC State football games, Carolina Hurricanes hockey games and North Carolina Museum of Art.
Sacramento took the #16 spot. Bankrate ranked Sacramento:
- Affordability – 6 out of 10
- Diversity – 10 out of 10
- Job Market – 6 out of 10
- Safety – 7 out of 10
- Wellness – 8 out of 10
Highlights noted were: California State Railroad Museum, American River Bike Trail and Sacramento Kings basketball games.
Also specifically mentioned:
- Home prices are more than the national average
- Sacramento is one of the more reasonable places to enjoy California living
- 250+ days of sunshine
- 32-mile network of bike trails
- Most diverse city on the list

One interesting additional factoid noted is that each of the cities on the list experienced a positive net migration – meaning that more people moved in as opposed to out.

Observation
As a former water lobbyist, when I look at lists of this type I can’t help but wonder why other key factors, such as a reliable water supply, are not a ranking factor. There are certainly several cities listed above where I would not purchase a home for that very reason.
