Description and review of the Sacramento Iris Society Show & Sale, an annual event held at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center.
It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when I walked over to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center to take in the Iris Society Show & Sale. The annual event is held each April.
While I have admired the Iris blooming around the neighborhood while on walks with my dog, I had not previously attended the event. Iris requires full sun in order to bloom, and my front and back yards are best suited for shade-loving plants.

When I entered the Shepard Garden & Arts Center, I was handed a ticket and instructed to place it in front of my favorite iris of those lined up on the nearby three long tables on one side of the room. The rows of iris had already been judged and awarded their ribbons, but this was the opportunity for the public to weigh in. There were many beautiful specimens on display, but I was able to narrow it down to one.
Walking up and down the rows, I noted all of the varied colors, shapes and sizes. On another nearby table, flower arrangements featuring iris were displayed. Additionally, there was a table featuring a variety of iris for sale. I thought three plants for $25 seemed most reasonable.
I chatted with several of the Iris Society members as I made my rounds, explaining that I was only there to admire the iris on display.
If you have sunny locations in which to plant them, you may want to check out the next Sacramento Iris Society Show & Sale.
