Description of the Sacramento Fuchsia Garden Club Show and Sale held recently at the Shepard Garden & Arts Center in McKinley Park.
This past Saturday I made a beeline at 10:00 a.m. to the Shepard Garden & Arts Center. Some of the garden clubs that utilize the garden center for meetings, shows and sales have resumed their activities after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While walking my dog a few days prior, I had noticed a sign announcing the one-day show and sale. Adding a new fuchsia or two to my back yard had been on my mind, and I knew exactly what variety I wanted.
I have had very good results with the Gardenmeister, a hybrid fuchsia that likes partial shade. The hummingbirds love them, and they provide a vivid splash of color to the garden.
Sacramento Fuchsia Garden Club Show and Sale
There were only a few people in the room when I entered and took a quick glance around. The show and sale was small in size, just a fraction of what it would have been in “normal” times. But then, these are still not normal times. While the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in California have plummeted, the pandemic is still with us.
On one side of the room a table had been set up with an attractive display. However, I headed to the table where fuchsias for sale were displayed. It was lucky I arrived when I did as the number of plants for sale ($4 or $5 if blooming) was limited. While chatting with the person manning the sale table, I chose two healthy-looking plants and after that joined the short line to pay for my purchases. In-and-out, mission accomplished.
Under other circumstances I would have lingered longer, looking over all the plants for sale, etc. Next time.

When is the annual sale of fuschias at Mc Kinley Gardens. It used to be the first Staurday in June ?
I checked the 2023 SG&AC calendar and did not see a fuchsia show and sale event listed.
