May 3, 2016 was the third Sacramento region Big Day of Giving.
During the 24 hours of the on-line fundraising event, Sacramento area residents had the opportunity to conveniently support Sacramento region non-profit organizations. The Sacramento region Big Day of Giving is part of a national giving day called Give Local America.
Let’s admit it – the various non-profit organizations in the Sacramento region make a big difference to our joint quality of life. The first two years of the Sacramento region Big Day of Giving were a resounding success – raising nearly $9 million.
It is easy to donate via credit card, however it is not so easy choosing what nonprofit(s) to donate to. The list of deserving nonprofits in the Sacramento region was lengthy, and it took some serious thought before I made my decision.

The day before the Sacramento region Big Day of Giving, I received an email notification from Golden 1 Credit Union. Golden 1 advised me that if I were to use a Golden 1 credit card or debit card that they would match donation amounts (from the contribution pool on a pro-rated basis) up to $50,000. It was a no-brainer as to what credit card I was going to use!
Then a mini-disaster – donation website malfunction. I, along with many others, could not finish the donation transaction. The website failure impacted similar events around the country. Because of the website malfunction what was to have been a 24-hour donation window was extended 15 more hours.
There was significant concern that, after the inability to complete their transaction due to the computer malfunction, frustrated potential contributors would not return and try a second time to made a donation during the time extension.
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation recently reported that the Sacramento region Big Day of Giving raised a record $7.1 million – exceeding the established goal of $6 million. The breakdown – 570 charities with contributions from nearly 14,000 individuals. Way to go Sacramento!
