(Last UPDATED 10/7/2021) Description of the Sutter Cancer Center Quilt Auction. NEW: See UPDATE below for the specifics on the 2021 event.
Original Post
I looked at the calendar earlier this week (where has the year gone?!) and realized that I only had a few days left to view the quilts donated for the 2017 Sutter Cancer Center Quilt Auction.
The auction, a Sacramento tradition since 1999, is held every three years. The monies raised fund Sutter Cancer Center breast cancer treatment programs and services.
I made my way to the Buhler Specialty Pavilion (2800 L Street) on Monday morning. Quilts are on display in the Lobby of the Buhler Specialty Pavilion and on Floors 2 through 7. Additional quilts are located in the Lobby and Art Walk of the Capitol Pavilion (2725 Capitol Avenue) and in the Lobby of the Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center (2825 Capitol Avenue).
The quilts on display are beautiful. I would categorize many of them as works of art. Sizes vary – some quilts are obviously intended for children – and some will undoubtedly be utilized as wall hangings. Other quilts are quite large and could easily be used as a topping for a queen/king size bed.
The colors range from pastels to bright, vivid primary colors and the subject matter runs the gamut – including abstract designs, flowers, animals and seasonal motifs.
Many of the quilt display cards indicate to whom the quilt is dedicated – sometimes an individual (deceased), a cancer survivor, and other times a group – such as veterans.
As I made my way from floor to floor admiring the quilts on display I was surprised by the number of quilts that did not have a single (minimum) bid.
The quilts will be sold two ways – via live auction and silent auction. The silent auction takes place daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. through November 3rd, and on November 4 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The live auction will be held on November 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Live Auction
The live auction quilts are identified by a note on the quilt display card and on the bid sheet. Early bidding for live auction quilts is open through November 2. The highest early bid will be the minimum live auction bid. The live auction begins at 10 a.m. on November 4 – and the auctioneer determines the winning bid for each live auction quilt.
Silent Auction
Silent auction bidding closes (by sections) starting at 1:00 p.m. on November 4. The highest bid for each quilt will be declared the winning bid.
How to Place a Silent or Early Live Auction Bid
Bid sheets are located next to the quilts. The bid sheet notes a minimum bid and a minimum incremental bid. Write your bid, name and phone number on the bid sheet of the quilt you would like to purchase.
