(UPDATED 9/17/2018) The William Land Golf Course is nestled in the 160 acre William Land Park. Built in 1924 by Perry Dye, William Land Golf Course is the oldest golf course in Sacramento. The 9-hole golf course is a par 34, and the par 3 third hole is the signature hole.
My friends from the Bay Area and I have a Thanksgiving tradition – we play the William Land Golf Course on the day prior to Thanksgiving each year. I don’t play golf very often, and I am not very good, but I do enjoy getting out on a golf course occasionally on a nice day.
We all enjoy playing William Land Golf Course which is dotted with large trees in a park-like setting – a beautiful venue whether you are an accomplished golfer – or not.
My friends and I have known each other for a long time, and while they are both good golfers and play in Bay Area golf leagues, they don’t mind playing with me from time to time.

Wednesday of last week was a bit foggy and damp early in the morning, but we had an 11:00 a.m. tee time – and it turned out to be a very nice day for a round of golf.

The course did not seem as busy as usual – which was fine by us. Our threesome became a foursome as we waited to tee off. A nice gentleman from Cameron Park and his son from the Bay Area had planned to meet at William Land Golf Course to play golf that same morning – but the son had to cancel at the last minute.
I was very relieved after we introduced ourselves and I told him up front that I don’t bother to keep score – he replied that he didn’t keep score either. He might well have kept score if he had played with his son, and perhaps was just being polite – but I enjoyed the round much more knowing that he was not going to take it seriously.
As we were playing the course we noticed that it was also set up for FootGolf, which is a combination of soccer and golf. FootGolf is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. FootGolf rules are similar to the rules of golf.
As we were sitting outside on the patio of the William Land Golf Course enjoying a beer after we finished our round we saw a group of early-teen boys heading to the first tee with their soccer balls and several parents to supervise . We noted that it was some time after the FootGolf players “tee’d” off before the next group of golfers were advised they were up.
All-in-all it was a very pleasant way to spend a late morning-early afternoon on the day before Thanksgiving.
