SACRAMENTO AREA COMMUNITY PROFILES (Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area)

The Greater Sacramento Area is composed of eight counties, two metropolitan areas and two micropolitan areas. The following counties are located in the Greater Sacramento Area: El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.

El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties comprise the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville, California Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Sacramento County was one of the original 27 counties established in February 18, 1850. Both the city and county of Sacramento were named for the Sacramento River.  The river was named in honor of the Holy Sacrament by Gabriel Moraga, the first to explore the area in 1808.

El Dorado County is also one of the original 27 counties formed February 18, 1850. When the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall at Coloma in January 1848 became known to the world, California, and particularly that section where gold was discovered, was called “El Dorado”.  “El Dorado” means ‘the gilded one’.  The name first appears at the beginning of the Sixteenth Century in reference to a mythical Indian chief who was said to have been covered with gold dust during the performance of religious rites.

Placer County was organized April 25, 1851 from parts of Sutter and Yuba Counties. Placer County takes its name from the Spanish term for deposits containing gold obtainable by washing.

Yolo County, one of the original 27 counties, was formed February 18, 1850.  The county name is Native American – believed to be a corruption of the tribal name “Yoloy” (meaning “place abounding in rushes”) or of the name of one Chief Yodo or the Native American village of Yodoi.
